Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto has expressed concerns over his team’s batting performance as they head into the Super 8 stage of the ICC T20 World Cup. Despite successfully defending 106 runs against Nepal, the lowest total in men’s T20 World Cup history, Shanto is worried about the team’s batting woes.
Bangladesh’s bowlers have been the saving grace in the tournament so far, with crucial wins against Sri Lanka and the Netherlands also largely due to their efforts. However, Shanto emphasized that the batters need to step up.
“It’s not acceptable for the bowlers to win us games every day, even though they’ve been doing it,” Shanto said in the post-match press conference. “Our batting is certainly worrying. It was possibly a 140-150 wicket, but we couldn’t get those runs.”
The top four batters fell quickly against Nepal, failing to adapt to the conditions. Shanto pointed out that trying to force the pace instead of playing proper shots was a mistake. He hopes for better performances from the batters in the next stage against tougher opponents like Afghanistan, Australia, and India.
Despite the low total, Shanto believed in his team’s ability to defend it. “We collectively believed we could defend this total. The bowlers made our job easy,” he said. “Tanzim gave us a good start, and Mustafizur bowled a maiden in the 19th over. Our fielders also played a crucial role by saving important boundaries.”
Shanto also highlighted the tricky conditions of the pitch, which offered significant seam movement and spin, making it challenging for the batters.
Bangladesh will need a more balanced performance, particularly from their batting lineup, to succeed in the Super 8 stage.
