Kevin De Bruyne to Stay at Manchester City, Confirms Pep Guardiola
In a recent press conference, Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola firmly stated that star midfielder Kevin De Bruyne would not be leaving the club this season. Despite rumors linking the Belgian international with a move to Saudi Arabia’s Al-Ittihad, Guardiola quashed any speculation about De Bruyne’s future at the Etihad Stadium.
De Bruyne, who has been with Manchester City since 2015, has just one year remaining on his current contract. The midfielder recently hinted at considering new adventures, sparking discussions about his potential departure. However, Guardiola was clear in his message: “Kevin isn’t leaving.”
Rumors of a Move to Saudi Arabia
The speculation surrounding De Bruyne’s future intensified after he mentioned discussing future plans with his wife, Michele, in a recent interview. He suggested that an “exotic adventure” could be on the cards, leading to reports of interest from Al-Ittihad. The Saudi Pro League club is reportedly keen on adding the talented playmaker to their ranks.
Guardiola’s Confidence in De Bruyne’s Stay
Guardiola’s statement comes as Manchester City prepares for their pre-season friendly against Celtic in North Carolina. The manager’s confidence in retaining De Bruyne is a significant reassurance for City fans, especially after the Belgian played a crucial role in the club’s historic fourth consecutive Premier League title last season.
De Bruyne’s impact on the team is undeniable, having won 15 major trophies with City, including six Premier League titles and a Champions League crown. Guardiola’s insistence on keeping him indicates the club’s desire to maintain their winning squad.
Future Beyond 2024: De Bruyne’s Uncertainty
While Guardiola is adamant about De Bruyne staying this season, questions remain about the player’s long-term future. De Bruyne, 33, has expressed openness to different possibilities, especially considering the lucrative offers from other leagues. In a recent interview, he shared his thoughts on the matter: “At my age, you have to be open to everything. You talk about unbelievable amounts in what may be the end of my career.”
He also acknowledged the challenges of uprooting his family, who have grown accustomed to life in England. “My eldest (child) is now eight years old and knows nothing but England. He also asks how long I will play at City,” De Bruyne noted.
City’s Transfer Plans
Meanwhile, Guardiola addressed potential transfer activities before the Premier League season kicks off on August 18 against Chelsea. While there have been links to players like Crystal Palace winger Eberechi Eze and speculation about offers for goalkeeper Ederson from Saudi Arabia, Guardiola suggested that the squad might not see major changes.
“Of course, until the last day, we have chances (to make transfers), I don’t rule out the option to have new players but I think there is an 85, 90 per cent chance we will have the same squad,” he explained.
As the new season approaches, Manchester City fans will be relieved to hear that De Bruyne, a key figure in the club’s recent successes, will remain with the team, at least for the time being.
