Wasim Jaffer in Talks with Punjab Team; Bhave to Coach Odisha, Yohannan for Andhra
Former Indian cricketer Wasim Jaffer is in discussions with the Punjab Cricket Association to take on a coaching role. Meanwhile, Surendra Bhave has been appointed as the head coach of the Odisha team, and Tinu Yohannan will coach Andhra.
What Happened? As the new domestic cricket season approaches, several significant coaching changes are taking place. Wasim Jaffer, renowned for being the highest run-scorer in Ranji Trophy history, is in talks to become the new head coach of the Punjab team. The role was vacated by Avishkar Salvi, who has joined the Indian women’s team as their bowling coach. Jaffer was also rumored to be a candidate for the Punjab Kings in the IPL but now appears likely to join the domestic side.
Coaching Changes Across India Tinu Yohannan, a former Indian pacer, has been appointed as the head coach of the Andhra team. Yohannan, 45, has previously coached Kerala and worked with the Delhi Capitals as a talent scout. He replaces Nirmal Kumar in the Andhra side.
Surendra Bhave, a former national selector and Maharashtra player, has taken over as the head coach of the Odisha team, succeeding Dinesh Mongia. Bhave brings a wealth of experience and will be looking to revitalize the Odisha team for the upcoming season.
In Maharashtra, Sulakshan Kulkarni has been appointed as the head coach after parting ways with the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA). He replaces Santosh Jedhe and will be joined by Ruturaj Gaikwad, who has been named captain for all three formats. Lakshmipathy Balaji, who served as Tamil Nadu’s bowling coach last season, is a candidate to step in as the head coach for Tamil Nadu.
Player Movements The domestic season also sees some notable player movements. Rahul Tripathi, who played for Goa last season, has returned to his home state of Maharashtra. Additionally, Rajneesh Gurbani, a key player in Vidarbha’s Ranji Trophy triumph in 2018, has joined Maharashtra after obtaining a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the Vidarbha Cricket Association.
Meanwhile, Subhranshu Senapati, former captain of Odisha and Chennai Super Kings player, has joined Madhya Pradesh as a guest player. Harpreet Singh Bhatia, who played for Chhattisgarh last season, has returned to Madhya Pradesh, where he had previously represented the team.
