ICC Removes Soft-Signal Rule for Catch Referrals
Starting June 1, 2023, the ICC will no longer require on-field umpires to give a “soft signal” when referring contentious catches to the TV umpire. Instead, on-field umpires will consult directly with the TV umpire to make the final decision. This change was recommended by the ICC’s Men’s Cricket Committee, supported by the Women’s Cricket Committee, and approved by the Chief Executives Committee.
Previously, even if the on-field umpires didn’t have a clear view, they had to give a soft signal that could only be overturned by the TV umpire with conclusive evidence. Sourav Ganguly, head of the Men’s Cricket Committee, noted that soft signals were often confusing and unnecessary.
Clarification on Free Hit Rule
There was confusion about a minor change to the Free Hit rule. It was initially reported that runs scored off a free hit when the batter is bowled would count as runs for the batter. However, the ICC clarified that these runs will continue to be counted as extras, not credited to the batter.
Mandatory Helmet Rule
The ICC has also made it mandatory for players in “high-risk” positions to wear helmets. This includes:
- Batters facing fast bowlers
- Wicketkeepers standing up to the stumps
- Fielders close to the batters in front of the wicket
