Jasprit Bumrah was the star as India edged out Pakistan by six runs in a low-scoring T20 World Cup match in New York on Sunday.
India managed 119 runs in 19 overs before being bowled out by Pakistan. Mohammad Rizwan led Pakistan’s reply with 31 runs, but Bumrah’s key wickets and his 3-14 in four overs sealed the game. Pakistan finished on 113-7.
Despite the challenging batting conditions, a record crowd of 34,028 in the USA witnessed an exciting contest. Bumrah dismissed Pakistan captain Babar Azam (13) and broke through with Rizwan’s wicket in the 15th over, leaving Pakistan at 80-4.
Given the ball for the penultimate over, Bumrah conceded just three runs and took Iftikhar Ahmed’s wicket. This left Pakistan needing 18 runs from the final over. Arshdeep Singh’s quick dismissal of Imad Wasim added to Pakistan’s troubles, and despite Naseem Shah’s effort, hitting two fours in the last over, India secured their second tournament win.
Pakistan’s loss, after their shock defeat to the USA, leaves them without points and needing victories against Canada and Ireland to advance to the Super Eight stage.
Earlier, Pakistan’s bowlers gave them a fighting chance, with Naseem Shah and Haris Rauf each taking three wickets as India was dismissed with an over to spare. Rishabh Pant’s 42 from 31 balls gave India a workable total after early losses of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli.
Rain delayed the match start, but the packed crowd, mostly Indian fans, remained enthusiastic. Pakistan captain Babar chose to bowl first, and Rohit started with a six off Shaheen Afridi’s third ball. However, rain halted the game for 36 minutes. Once play resumed, Pakistan’s bowlers quickly dismissed Kohli and Rohit, leaving India at 19-2.
India struggled, adding only 24 runs for the last five wickets, and were bowled out with six balls left. But Bumrah’s outstanding performance ensured a crucial win for the tournament favorites.
