Heinrich Klaasen emphasized the need for a different batting approach on New York’s slow pitch during the T20 World Cup 2024. South Africa decided to bat first against Bangladesh on Monday, despite winning their previous two matches while chasing at the same ground.
Klaasen explained, “This was the third game on the wicket, and it gets slower. Bangladesh’s bowlers excel in such conditions. We didn’t want to chase 120 because their cutters and spinners are world-class. That’s why we opted to bat first.”
South Africa faced a tough start, losing four wickets for just 23 runs. However, they recovered by adopting a strategy similar to the middle overs of an ODI, focusing on maintaining a run rate around six per over and waiting for boundary opportunities.
Klaasen credited David Miller’s performance in the previous game against the Netherlands, saying, “David showed us how to bat on this wicket. Our mindset was more like playing an ODI, aiming for a run a ball and staying patient.”
