The International Cricket Council (ICC) has set different Playing Conditions (PCs) for the two semifinals of the T20 World Cup. The India-England game has extra time allotted to ensure it can be completed on Thursday, unlike the second semifinal.
The ICC stated, “A total of 250 minutes of additional time is available for both semi-finals. The first semi-final has 60 minutes available at the end of the day’s play with a further 190 minutes available the next day. The second semi-final has an additional 250 minutes available on the scheduled day, with no reserve day.”
This means if rain affects the first semifinal between South Africa and Afghanistan, it can be extended or moved to Thursday afternoon. If rain disrupts the India-England game, both semifinals might be played simultaneously.
India’s skipper Rohit Sharma commented, “We don’t know what’s going to happen. The only thing I’m worried about is if the game goes on until pretty late, we have a charter flight. We might miss that flight, but that’s okay.”
The rules also state that a minimum of 10 overs must be played by each side for a match to be valid. If play is interrupted, the umpires will use extra time to try to achieve a result on the scheduled day. If not possible, the Reserve Day will be used.
If India qualifies for the semifinal, they will play in Guyana. If the final is abandoned, the finalists will be declared joint winners.
Key Rules for Semifinals and Final:
Semi Final:
- If tied, a Super Over will determine the winner.
- If the Super Over is not possible or the match is abandoned, the team topping its group progresses to the Final.
Final:
- If tied, a Super Over will determine the winner.
- If the Super Over is not possible or the match is abandoned, the teams will be declared joint winners.
