Clive Madande Sets Unwanted Test Record with 42 Byes Against Ireland
Zimbabwe wicketkeeper Clive Madande has set an unwanted Test record by conceding 42 byes in an innings against Ireland at Stormont. The 24-year-old, who made his debut in this Test, surpassed the previous record of 37 byes set by England’s Les Ames in 1934.
A Tough Debut: Madande’s performance has been notably challenging. Having been dismissed for a duck in Zimbabwe’s first innings, he struggled with the gloves as Ireland built a modest lead. The 42 byes conceded by Madande were more than the 40-run first-innings lead that Ireland established over Zimbabwe. This record-breaking number of byes occurred despite several deliveries being difficult to handle, including those down the legside and deliveries that swung late.
Historical Context: The record for most byes in a Test innings was previously held by England’s Les Ames, who allowed 37 byes in a Test against Australia at The Oval in 1934. Madande’s record-breaking performance thus reflects a challenging day for the young wicketkeeper.
Match Progress: Zimbabwe’s first innings score of 210 was surpassed by Ireland, who scored 250, thanks in part to a crucial last-wicket stand of 47 runs between Andy McBrine (28) and Matthew Humphreys (27 not out). This stand helped Ireland secure a narrow first-innings lead.
In response, Zimbabwe faced a challenging second innings but ended the day with a score of 12-0, trailing by 28 runs after a rain-affected second day.
Notable Performances: Peter Moor, the former Zimbabwe international now playing for Ireland, top-scored with 79 runs, setting a record for the highest score by an Ireland opener in Tests. This score was just four runs short of his personal best, which he achieved while playing for Zimbabwe in 2018.
On the bowling front for Zimbabwe, Tanaka Chivanga impressed with 3-39, marking his first three Test wickets in only his second match at this level. Fellow paceman Blessing Muzarabani also performed well, claiming 3-53.
Looking Ahead: As the match progresses, Zimbabwe will need a strong performance in their second innings to overcome the deficit and challenge Ireland. The team will hope for a better showing from Madande behind the stumps to avoid further unwanted records.
